NEW-boy John Bateman is putting in extra fitness sessions to help ensure he makes a flying start to his Wigan career.
Many of the Warriors’ first-team squad report for pre-season training on Monday.
Officially, it is an “optional” week – but coach Shaun Wane expects to see them all ready to go.
And Bateman, 20, will certainly be doing his best to impress his new coach after signing from Bradford on a three-year deal.
Wigan’s pre-season sessions are notoriously tough, and the second-rower said: “I’ve been doing some fitness work anyway, and I’ve done some extras this week.
“I want to hit the ground running and, being new to the squad, I want to show Shaun Wane and his coaches that they’ve made the right decision to bring me to the club.
“I’m looking forward to getting my head down and working hard.”
The former England academy captain – who will live with fellow new signing Dan Sarginson for the short-term – hopes to settle in quickly to Wigan’s set-up.
He said: “I know a few of the lads already.
“I toured with George Williams, Joe Burgess, Lewis Tierney and Rocky Hampshire, and I know Dan too, so I’ll be alright.”
Wigan’s overseas players and internationals have been given more time off.
Bateman and Sarginson are among six signings for next season.
