SHAUN Wane believes England hold the secret weapon to take them forward on the international stage – Mark Bitcon.
Wigan’s head of sports science [pictured] is currently with the national squad in South Africa, ahead of an autumn series against France and Wales.
Bitcon has worked with England for the past year, overseeing their conditioning, and his involvement will be amped up in the build-up to the 2013 World Cup – as evident by their trip to the same high-altitude training camp used by Olympic athletes and Spain’s World Cup-winning squad.
Wane said: “I can’t praise Mark enough for what he has done at Wigan.
“He thinks outside the box, his attention to detail is extraordinary – nothing is left to chance.
“From the players’ sleeping patterns, training, diet, hydration, supplements... he looks at it all and he has helped change the culture of Wigan.
“We’ve seen a direct link between what Mark has done at Wigan and the players’ performances, and I’m sure he’ll have an impact with England.
“It will take time, because at the club he’s with the players every day, and England only meet sporadically, so it will be a challenge for him – but it’s one he’ll love.
“There’s no doubting there are some talented players in the England squad and if he can improve them, then it bodes well.
“As a club, it makes us proud to have Mark involved in the England squad – his reputation is second-to-none and he’s a big draw-card for us, because players want to work with him.”
