It may rank as the most surreal contract announcement in Wigan’s history – after Evander Holyfield revealed three new deals!
The boxing legend took to Twitter to state Joel Tomkins, Taulima Tautai and Liam Farrell have signed extensions.
In a PR coup, it is thought club officials made contact with the American superstar after he accidentally tagged Wigan into one of his messages on the social media network earlier this week.
His Friday afternoon tweet to his 250,000 followers stated: “I know I tweeted @wiganwarriorsrl in error on Sunday but this is no mistake. L Farrell, J Tomkins & T Tautai have all signed new contracts!”
The message was shared by scores of fans, with no immediate confirmation from Wigan.
Tautai and Tomkins were out of contract at the end of this season. The club had an option for next year on Farrell.
Holyfield’s link with Wigan began when he mistakenly typed the club’s official name – instead of basketball outfit Golden State Warriors – into a tweet earlier this week.
Rugby league fans spotted his error and, to the former four-time world heavyweight champion’s credit, he shared in some banter with fans.
