WARRIORS flyer Joe Burgess will be fit in time to make an impact in Wigan’s title defence sooner than first expected.
The 19-year-old, who has made a stunning impact on the first team with 19 tries from 22 appearances this term, was initially feared to be out for eight weeks after sustaining a knee injury in the win over Catalan Dragons on July 12.
But keyhole surgery on Tuesday revealed Burgess could be back in time to face Widnes Vikings on August 29.
Warriors coach Shaun Wane said: “Joe has had his op and is okay. It went well and the medical staff are happy.
“We expect him to be out for about four weeks, it’s not ideal to have any player out injured but it gives Budgie a chance to get a rest now after a lot of game time this season. He’ll be back for the big games at the end of the season which is great news.
“It also gives me the chance to have a look at another of our academy products - Dom Manfredi who I am very happy to have, I have a lot of confidence in Dom and I expect him to come in and do a great job.”
