Joe Burgess is leaving Sydney Roosters early - to move to NRL rivals Souths.

The winger is cutting short his three-year deal with the Roosters to return to Wigan next year.

He has made only four appearances for Trent Robinson’s side.

Now, he has been given permission to play the remainder of this season with South Sydney.

Ex-Wigan coach Maguire is the coach of the Rabbitohs, who have England internationals Sam, George and Tom Burgess – no relation – in their squad.

Confirmation of the move is expected early this week.

Burgess made his Wigan debut in 2013 and became a firm fans’ favourite over the following two years before moving to the NRL.

His return home, confirmed last Friday, has been well-received by many Warriors supporters.
