Morgan Escare is hoping his utility value will make him a mainstay in the Warriors side next season.

The livewire Frenchman met up with many of his new team-mates at training this week.

With Sam injured I have a very good chance at the start the season (to play full-back), and I hope to play well and stay in the team

Signed on a one-year deal, he is set to start the 2017 campaign at full-back in place of injured Sam Tomkins.

Escare makes no secret of the fact the No.1 role is his favourite – but is happy to play elsewhere if it secures him a place in the team.

“I prefer full-back, but I will play wing or halfback, they’re okay. But I prefer full-back,” he said.

“With Sam injured I have a very good chance at the start the season (to play full-back), and I hope to play well and stay in the team.”

The 25-year-old spent the last four years at Catalans Dragons where he earned a reputation as one of Super League’s most exciting players.

Wigan moved to sign him after it emerged Tomkins’ injury will eat into next year, though a date on a likely return has not been revealed.

Escare says he is “happy” to be at Wigan, where he has been joined by ex-Dragons team-mate Romain Navarrete – who is also acting as a translator for Escare.

Prop Navarrete has a solid grasp of English – Escare less so – and both are having lessons as they settle into their new homes.

“I had interest from other clubs,” added Escare, who has taken part in an ‘optional’ training week. “But once I knew of Wigan’s interest, it became my focus. I’m excited to be here.”
