Escare: I don't have point to prove

The live-wire French full-back broke onto the Super League scene with his hometown club in 2013.

But last season he struggled to break into Laurent Fraysinnous’ side, making just 10 appearances in both competitions and was subsequently released at the end of the year.

Wigan swiftly moved to sign up the 25-year-old on a one-year deal and, after an impressive start to his career in England, they agreed a new three-year contract last week.

Tomorrow, Escare faces the Dragons for the first time in a competitive match - but says his desire to impress will be no more than usual.

He said: “I don’t need to show him (Fraysinnous) what I can do in this game.

“He can see what I’m doing in the last nine or 10 games, so I don’t need to show him in this game especially - hopefully I can carry on (my good form) until the end of the season.”

Escare’s parents will be at the DW Stadium for tomorrow’s game (kick-off 3pm), which has been marketed as a family fun day.

The France international says he and his wife, and their young daughter, have settled into their new home.

“I enjoy my new life here and my wife and kid enjoy it here, too,” he said.

“Normally, I’ve had family and friends every two or three weeks, and my parents are over this week - they will support Wigan!

“Day after day, I’m closer to my new team-mates and more confident with my language.”

Escare was frozen out of the Catalans side by the strong form of Tony Gigot.

And his fellow Frenchman has given the Dragons a lift since returning to the side from suspension.

“Tony is a key player,” added Escare. “He brings the side a lot of desire to win.”

Shaun Wane admits he has been able to use Escare’s inside knowledge of the Dragons players in their preparations for tomorrow’s match.

“He’s not one for making big deals of things, I think he just wants to impress me and play really well for us,” said Wane.

“I don’t think he has a point to prove – the crowd still love him there, as we found in our pre-season friendly - but I want him to keep playing and improve on what he does with Wigan, because there are things about our system which he hasn’t completely grasped yet.

“But I’m very happy with Morgan, he’s doing some good stuff for us - he’s a bit like George (Williams) in that he has loads of improvement in him.

“But he gives that zip and quickness on an edge and through the middle, so he’s doing a good job.

“As he understands our system more and more, and as he learns more about what players do, he will get even better.”

Wane has a settled spine to his side, with Williams and Thomas Leuluai in the halves and Sam Powell and Micky McIlorum sharing the hooker duties. The player who would appear to be next in line for one of those roles, Jake Shorrocks, has suffered a season-ending knee injury - and Wane says Escare is a contender to provide cover for those roles if needed.

As expected, Joe Burgess and McIlorum have come into the Wigan squad, replacing injured Joel Tomkins and suspended Anthony Gelling.

Catalans are missing Krisnan Inu, Justin Horo, Brayden Williame, Greg Bird, Luke Burgess, Jodie Broughton and Jason Baitieri.
