SAM Tomkins’ first opportunity to make his New Zealand Warriors debut will be against Wigan Wariors.
An agreement has been reached between the Super League champions and NRL outfit to go head to head as Wigan head down under in February, giving the 24-year-old world record signing the chance to play his first game since helping Wigan to a Grand Final win in October.
The match will take place at the 25,800-capacity Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on Wednesday February 12, 2014, 10 days ahead of Wigan’s World Club Challenge clash with Sydney Roosters.
With a 7.30pm local kick-off time, Wigan Warriors fans at home will need to set their alarms early to be ready for the 6.30am UK-time kick-off.
The fixture comes three days before The New Zealand Warriors participate in the Auckland nines at Lang Park, and Wigan coach Shaun Wane can’t wait to lead the club to New Zealand for the first time in its history.
“Playing the Warriors in Hamilton will be a great experience for our squad and is excellent preparation ahead of our World Club game in Sydney,” he said, as he looks to emulate the Wigan side of 1994 which beat Brisbane 20-16 on Australian soil to claim the World Club Challenge.
“It is a trip we are all looking forward to and we are delighted to have been able to arrange this historic meeting between the two Warriors clubs in what should be a tough competitive work out.”
