PAUL Prescott was due to jet out to France today as he aims to take another stride towards a first-team return.
The prop made his comeback from back surgery in an Under-20s match at Castleford last Sunday.
But with the U20s having no game this weekend, Prescott is set to turn out for lower-league South Wales Scorpions in their Northern Rail Cup group match at Toulouse Olympique.
Wigan have a feeder arrangement with the Scorpions, allowing their players to link-up with the Championship One outfit. Coach Shaun Wane said: “Paul needs a game this weekend so he’s going to have a run with South Wales. He’s got his passport ready and hopefully he’ll be back pressing for a first-team spot soon.”
Prescott was handed the No.8 shirt this year but has yet to figure this term because of the off-season surgery.
Wigan young guns Scott Leatherbarrow and Jamie Acton played for the Scorpions last week on a dual-registration. Officially, Prescott has joined on loan but that can be cancelled by Wigan at any stage.
Meanwhile, prop Tom Spencer is set to head back to Leigh – where he is on a dual-registration – this weekend to accommodate the return of Ben Flower to Wane’s side.
Promising full-back Matt Russell is also set to play for Leigh under the same arrangement.
Wane will name his squad for Sunday’s visit of Catalan later today, with Flower’s return the only expected change. Centre George Carmont will be sidelined for another week or two with a broken thumb injury, while Stuart Fielden and Amos Roberts are still out.
