WIGAN went down 28-12 to St Helens in a pre-season friendly at Langtree Park.
The Warriors were 22-0 behind at the break, but battled back with two tries in the second-half through John Bateman and Connor Farrell.
Any hope the Warriors had of salvaging the result, however, were extinguished when Joe Greenwood muscled over for his second try.
Pre-season games can often be accused of lacking intensity - even derbies - but the 6,888 fans witnessed a spicy encounter to whet the appetite for the start of the new Super League campaign in less than two weeks.
Wigan were without six players through injury - including influential Sean O’Loughlin and new signing Taulima Tautai - but still managed to field a recognisable team.
Saints included off-season recruits Travis Burns and Atelea Vea, the latter, in particular, catching the eye with a strong display.
The early exchanges were fierce and even, but slowly Saints wrestled control.
Prop Kyle Amor provided the offload for Greenwood’s first, and in the 21st minute Adam Swift raced away to make it 10-0.
The Warriors’ errors prevented them building any sustained pressure, but they were still within touching distance with five minutes until the break.
But Saints found an extra gear and struck twice in three minutes - through Vea and Tommy Makinson - to swell their advantage to 22-0 at the break.
Wane’s half-time talk made an impact, and two tries before the hour-mark set up an interesting finish.
First, Charnley collected Swith’s angled kick, from which Bateman went over.
Farrell, younger brother of Liam, was rewarded for a strong performance with a try which cut Saints’ lead to 10 points - only for Greenwood to ensure the Super League champions took the friendly bragging rights.
