DAN Sarginson is a major doubt for Wigan’s clash against Australian heavyweights Brisbane Broncos.
The England Test centre ran yesterday as he continues his rehab from a pelvis injury.
But he has been ruled out of Thursday’s Super League opener at Widnes, and Shaun Wane says his hopes of featuring in the World Club Series two weeks later may be beaten by the clock.
Wane said last night: “It was good to see Dan running again today, but he’s still a few weeks away.
“It would be great if he could play in the Brisbane game, because we know what he’s capable of, but we’ll see how he is over the next couple of weeks and take it from there.”
With centre Iain Thornley also sidelined long-term, Wane plans to switch either Joel Tomkins or John Bateman from the back-row to the three-quarters for Thursday’s opener in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
Such a move may free up a bench spot for either Ryan Sutton or Connor Farrell, two homegrown forwards who have impressed during pre-season.
And Sam Powell’s bright performance in a 24-6 friendly loss at Workington on Sunday has also thrust him into the reckoning.
Wane will name his 19-man squad today, and says new faces Larne Patrick Taulima Tautai should figure. Sean O’Loughlin and Lee Mossop may be included – they didn’t play in any friendlies but “are as fit as they can be”.
