SHAUN Wane says Wigan threw down the welcome mat to Sam Burgess, admitting teasingly: “You never know what’s around the corner.”

The former Souths superstar and his Bath team-mates spent two days training at the Warriors’ centre in Orrell.

We tried to show it off – you never know what’s around the corner, do you? He loves it here. He’s been in early, talking to the players, he’s a league man – he’s not a union man – and it’s been good having him here

Asked whether he tried to make a positive impression on Burgess, Wane replied: “We tried to show it off – you never know what’s around the corner, do you? He loves it here. He’s been in early, talking to the players, he’s a league man – he’s not a union man – and it’s been good having him here.”

Bath coach Mike Ford – a former Wigan team-mate of Wane – has spoken glowingly about how much his Premiership outfit got from the joint sessions.

But it wasn’t all one-way.

Matty Smith worked with their kickers, coaches shared ideas about best practices and Wane says other players learned from spending time with other athletes.

“They looked after us at Bath in August, it paid off and we wanted to return the favour,” he said.

“It’s been great, and hopefully we can go back down there later this year.

“We’ve had a great couple of days, against players who don’t know our system.

“We’ve worked with their kickers to try and improve our kickers, and it was important we got something out of it – it wasn’t just them getting something out of it – and we have.”

Prop Dom Crosby won’t be fit to face Wakefield on Friday, after failing to recover from a knee injury in time.
