Wane: England hasn’t been on my mind

SHAUN Wane says he has not considered any possibility of him joining Wayne Bennett’s England coaching staff.

Australian Bennett – named as Steve McNamara’s successor a week ago – has not yet appointed an assistant coach.

The RFL says the Brisbane boss is expected to name a Super League-based support group, which has inevitably triggered speculation about possible candidates to be Bennett’s No.2.

Wane certainly has quality credentials, having guided Wigan to a league leaders shield in 2012, a double in 2013 and successive Grand Finals since.

Leeds’ Brian McDermott – the USA national boss – and Castleford’s Daryl Powell would also be obvious names in the frame.

But Wane said: “I’ve honestly not thought about it.

“All my focus has been on reviewing the Catalans game and preparing the players for Friday night (against Huddersfield).

“Nothing to do with England has even crossed my mind.”

He reported no fresh injury problems ahead of the Sky-televised clash at the Giants.

Meanwhile, a solution to the DW Stadium fixture clash appears in sight.

Both The Warriors and Latics are both scheduled to play home games on Easter Monday, which is March 28.

Rather than switch one of the matches to another day, it’s thought they may go ahead on the same day – with the League One outfit kicking off around lunchtime and the Super League clash in the evening.

Such a scenario would not be unique; Hull City and Hull FC have previously played at the KC Stadium on the same day.

And chairman Ian Lenagan hinted once the issue is resolved, Wigan Warriors are likely to make a call on whether to take a home game on the road to London again.

“All being well we will take another game to London,” he said on local radio. “Until we see the way the query fixtures get resolved because we don’t want to upset our fans.”

Wigan staged a match against Catalans at Millwall last year.

Lenagan has said if they return to the capital this year it will be before the Super 8s begin at the end of July.
