WATCHING George Williams train under the Florida sun has reinforced Shaun Wane’s belief they will have a gem in the No.6 shirt next season.

Williams was no stranger to first-team duty last term, figuring in 23 matches in various roles – more appearances than regular stand-off Blake Green.

But the Australian’s exit has given Williams a chance to step out of his shadows. And Wane says the 20-year-old has already started putting his fingerprints on the Wigan side during their training sessions in America.

Speaking from Florida, Wane said: “I didn’t need convincing before the trip, but George did really well for us in Florida.

“He was dominating the side and behaving as I thought he would.

“He is a quality player. He’s still very young – it wouldn’t be fair to expect him to be ‘out of this world’ every week – but I’m confident he’ll do a great job for us.”

Sam Powell is also in the mix and will be battling for a halfback role or a place on the bench.
