SHAUN Wane will take a watching brief when Wigan play their first game of the year this weekend.

He has handed the duties of preparing for Sunday’s friendly at Leigh to assistant coach John Winder and head of youth Matty Peet.

While seven players from last October’s Grand Final will feature, the bulk of the squad is made up of fringe players and academy-products.

Wane said: “John and Matty are going to run it, and it gives me a chance to sit back and watch the young lads and see how they perform. I’ll not be reading too much into the result, it’s more about looking at aspects of the performance.

“There are certain things in our attack, especially, we’ve been working on and that’s what I want to see.”

Wane has reminded his young players that Dom Manfredi, Joe Burgess and Oliver Gildart have all caught his eye in this fixture and gone on to crack into his first-team.

“There should be no shortage of motivation from them,” the head coach said.

Tickets are on sale – priced £20 adults and £5 Under-18s – and fans can pay on the day.
