JOE Burgess ran in four tries as the Challenge Cup holders survived a tense first half to eventually win 58-6 at Dewsbury and earn a date at the DW against Hunslet in the fifth round.
The 19-year-old winger opened Wigan’s account on four minutes and was in again shortly after, before a spirited Dewsbury resistance kept them out for the next 40 minutes.
England winger Josh Charnley left the field with a knee injury after 20 minutes, and a scan tomorrow (Saturday) will reveal the full extent of the problem.
With the Warriors 12-0 up at half-time, Dewsbury’s Dale Morton’s determination was more than Wigan’s Sarginson could handle as he powered over the former London Bronco to score after the restart. To sweeten the deal, Tom Hemmingway’s touchline conversion attempt poetically dinked off the upright before going over.
But that was as close as Dewsbury got as Wigan ran in eight unanswered second half tries.
Burgess strode over on 48 minutes following another simple move before Sarginson got his name on the board as the the hour approached.
Former Warrior Karl Pryce was penalised for interference and the resulting play produced a smooth movement across the pitch, with Hampshire providing the final pass.
Shortly after Burgess added a his fourth and this effectively ended the match as a contest as Iain Thornley strode in on 63 minutes shortly followed by a Smith try from a Scott Taylor break up the middle.
Taylor again broke with 10 minutes to go, this time halfback George Williams received the reward.
Thornley added to the scoring with his second, bringing up the half-century which looked impossible half an hour earlier before Green capped the night off with a last minute touchdown.
