SOUTH LANCS CHESHIRE TWO
Ashton-on-Mersey 37 Orrell 3
ORRELL brought the curtain down on their season with an away defeat against a side already assured of promotion.
Orrell found themselves up against a side that was fitter and stronger in the forwards. Ashton nearly scored in the opening minutes, but for a try saving tackle by John Presho. Ashton opened up the scoring with a penalty.
Although Orrell were rarely out of their own half, they did eventually get into the Ashton half and kicked a penalty to level, but it was to be their only score.
An unconverted try made it 8-3 at half-time. But Ashton powered ahead with five tries.
Orrell’s forwards did a tremendous amount of tackling, especially by Jonny Pegg and Mick Cardwell, but were unable to retain the ball, even on their own throw in and poor position play reduced Orrell’s chances of scoring. Orrell are now 4th in the league, but could be overtaken by 5th place Sefton who have two more games to play.
Orrell 2nd team played away in the quarter-final of the Raging Bull Plate against Parkonians 2nd and won 20–18.
They will play Oldham 4ths in the semi on Saturday April 17 at St John Rigby College. Kick Off 2.30. This Saturday the Second team are at home in a league game against Burnley 3rds.
