LATICS were last night handed an outstanding chance of reaching the last eight of the FA Cup after being handed an away trip to either Huddersfield Town or Leicester City in the fifth round.

Only once before have Latics reached this stage, back in 1986/7 under the stewardship of Ray Mathias.

That year, Latics went all the way to the quarter-finals before losing to Leeds United, who bowed out in the semi-finals to eventual winners Coventry.

After being drawn against lower-division opposition for the third time out of three, Latics will fancy their chances of repeating the feat.

Latics will discover the identity of their opponents next week when the Foxes and the Terriers replay at the King Power Stadium.

It had looked like Huddersfield would see off Leicester in 90 minutes, only for Chris Wood to equalise eight minutes from time in West Yorkshire.

After requiring a replay to see off Bournemouth in round three, Latics booked their place in round five at the first time of asking thanks to Jordi Gomez’s early penalty at Macclesfield.

Elsewhere, Premier League leaders Manchester United, champions Manchester City, FA Cup holders Chelsea and Arsenal were all kept apart in the draw, with ties to be played in mid-February.

FA Cup fifth round draw: Huddersfield or Leicester v Wigan, MK Dons v Barnsley, Oldham v Everton, Luton Town v Millwall, Arsenal v Blackburn, Manchester City v Leeds, Manchester United v Reading, Middlesbrough v Brentford or Chelsea.

Ties will be played on the weekend of February 16/17.
