EMMERSON Boyce is hoping the international break will allow Wigan Athletic to work on the fine-tuning that stands between them and the points tally they deserve.

Latics ended a wretched run of three successive defeats by drawing 2-2 with Everton at the weekend, to head into the latest break with five points from their seven matches played.

It could and should be far more, given the level of performance put in so far. And Boyce says the players who haven’t gone away on international duty have to use the next week or so to work out how to improve that extra few per cent.

“It’s international week now and that means a lot of the lads flying all around the world,” Boyce told the Evening Post.

“That makes it hard to analyse Saturday’s game, but we’ll get plenty of work done on the training ground and try to put right what went wrong.

“Overall I thought the performance was very good - we created loads of chances, we scored goals when we needed to and we were so close to what would have been a vital win.

“The positive was that we didn’t lose, and we can certainly take heart from much of the performance.

“We should be able to see out the game for another five minutes, but we couldn’t cope.

“At the end of the day, though, Everton are a good team, they grind out results and that was the case again.”

Meanwhile, captain Gary Caldwell has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Barclays Premier League Player of the Year honour at this year’s North West Football Awards.

Former Latics winger Antonio Valencia is also up for the award, alongside Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, Martin Skrtel of Liverpool, Everton’s John Heitinga, Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan and former Blackburn striker Yakubu.
