Double delight for Martinez
Latics are celebrating a real coup after following up the signing of Victor Moses with the loan capture of Bolivian hotshot Marcelo Moreno just minutes before the transfer window slammed shut last night.
As expected, Moses put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal yesterday lunchtime to become Roberto Martinez's fourth signing of the window.
But the subsequent arrival of the Brazilian-born Moreno on a six-month loan deal from Shakhtar Donetsk was real cloak-and-dagger stuff – and took the footballing world by surprise.
The 22-year-old jetted in to Wigan yesterday afternoon to agree personal terms and pass his medical, and Latics rushed the paperwork through just in time to beat the deadline.
After a whirlwind 24 hours, Moreno said: "Roberto Martinez sold the club to me, and I am determined to come to England and make an
impression
"I want to do everything I can to get in the team now and I'm looking forward to meeting all my new team-mates and fighting for my place."
The arrival of Moreno further bolsters Martinez's striking options, coming just hours after the 2.5m deal for Moses was concluded.
SpeculationMoses, 19, opted to join Latics ahead of several other interested clubs – and he admitted the warm Wigan welcome he received was a crucial factor in his decision.
He said: "There was a lot of speculation about me going to a number of clubs. But, from the first day when I met with the gaffer and Brenda Spencer, they were very welcoming, they made me feel very happy to be here and I just thought this was the right club for me.
"The gaffer wants me to just go out on the pitch and enjoy myself, and that's a great thing to hear.
"It gives me plenty of confidence. Roberto is a great manager and I can't wait to start playing for him."
Having represented England at junior level, Moses is also aware that a full cap could be within reach if he impresses with his new club.
He added: "I've played a lot of Championship football and now I have the chance to prove myself in the Premier League.
"I know I'll have to step my game up and work a lot harder, but I'm looking forward to every game and hopefully I can continue progressing as a player.
"Now I'm in the Premier League, hopefully I can prove to everyone I am a good player, and hopefully a call-up to the England senior team might be on the cards in the future.
"But I just want to take things one step at a time and focus on playing for Wigan for the time being."
The double swoop makes it five new signing this month for Latics, with Vladimir Stojkovic, Gary Caldwell and Steve Gohouri having joined earlier in the month.
Latics also allowed Won-Hee Cho, Daniel de Ridder and Olivier Kapo to leave on loan, making them one of the busiest clubs of the window.
