Fig can earn his Spurs
Maynor Figueroa
MAYNOR Figueroa says tomorrow night’s trip to Tottenham represents the perfect opportunity for Wigan Athletic to turn their season around.
Latics travel to White Hart Lane rock bottom of the Premier League with just 16 matches remaining, looking to cut the gap between themselves and safety which currently stands at four points.
They need only look to the corresponding fixture last term, when Hugo Rodallega’s late goal clinched a 1-0 away win for the visitors.
And Figueroa says it’s results like that which mean Latics will never give up hope of getting out of their present predicament.
“The objective for us is once again to stay up, and we will be giving all we’ve got to win as many games as we can to ensure that happens,” Figueroa told the Evening Post.
“All of the players should realise we are in a bad position, but there is a big possibility we can turn things around and start to climb up the league table.
“Last year it went all the way to the last day of the season, and it was real do-or-die stuff at the end.
“No-one here wanted to be in the same position again this season, but unfortunately that has proved to be the case and we must continue to fight for every point to stay in this league.”
Figueroa accepts Latics will have their work cut out to get anything at Tottenham, but he says they can draw great heart from their backs-to-the-wall victory there last term.
“Everybody knows about how good Tottenham are this season – their form has been incredible recently,” he added.
“But we have had good results there in the past and we hope that will be the same again tomorrow.
“They have some great players – genuinely world-class stars. But they are also human beings just like we are, and we have to view them as that.
“When we go out there tomorrow night, it is 11 against 11 and we have a great chance of beating them if we play as well as we can.
“We proved last year we are capable of doing so. We have to remember the things we did right that day, and try to repeat it on the night.”
The Honduran has once again proved his versatility this term by slotting into the five-man defensive formation Roberto Martinez has tinkered with.
“When the gaffer decided to play with three centre-backs, it was okay because I have played in that system for Honduras for many years,” Figueroa added.
“I enjoy play as a left-sided centre-back, but I also enjoy playing at left-back. I honestly don’t mind where I play – the only thing that matters is that I prove to the manager I deserve a place in the team.”

Monday, January 30, 2012 at 08:38 PMLeft back is Martinez Achilles heal and has been since he joined. we've played the best football this season with wing backs and he still tries to do it with a makeshift midfielder. The man has no credibility whatsoever, yet Whelan continues to back him. If Whelan knew nothing about football I could understand it.

Monday, January 30, 2012 at 06:21 PMAll we are hearing is what has happened before in terms of finding an escape route from the relegation trap door. The difference is that we had enough players with the capacity to do this before. Not any more, I'm afraid and we're down to the last 16 games - the next of which is against an attacking side of high quality. On all the evidence we've seen since the glory days of August, this just isn't going to happen and can hardly be an incentive in trying to atteact new players to the club.

Monday, January 30, 2012 at 04:10 PMis it just me has the phase "represents the perfect opportunity for Wigan Athletic to turn their season around" been used so many times this year. its getting like it weekly team talk. i would have expect after the many many times this has been said, Our season would have staredt or at least moved in the right direction...but as always...we lose and then the next game its "represents the perfect opportunity for Wigan Athletic to turn their season around"... better start soon or there will no games left to say this..

Monday, January 30, 2012 at 12:20 PMI think left midfield is the best position for him, but we need a proper left back.
