Future's bright, reckons Mario

Skipper Mario Melchiot has predicted a bright future for Latics under new manager Roberto Martinez.

The Dutchman admits he admired from afar the good work Martinez did at his previous club Swansea, who quickly established a reputation for being one of the most attractive footballing sides in the land.

And Melchiot, schooled at the famed Ajax academy in Holland, says he cannot wait for Martinez to work his magic next season.

"We've all seen the way he liked to play and how he wants his teams to play, and it's really positive," Melchiot said.

"You can see the enthusiasm he has for the game, and when you get someone who is as hungry as he is it becomes easier to translate down to the players.

"We've got a new man in charge with a totally different view on the game, which I think is exciting.

"It's always interesting to see what different views people have on the game.

"As soon as we all get an understanding for how he wants us to play we'll be looking at a bright future.

"You always want to achieve more than you did the previous season and that's definitely one of the things we're going to look forward to."

Melchiot, who has been a virtual ever-present in the side since arriving in the summer of 2007, also welcomes the opportunity to prove himself all over again under a new manager.

He said: "We've all had a much-needed break after a long season, but it's good to be back.

"It's a clean slate for everyone and an opportunity to show the manager what you're capable and why you should be in the team.

"Those that haven't had as many opportunities beforehand now have the chance to show how good they are.

"That can really lift a team because everyone is fighting for a place in the first XI and always wanting to impress.

"It's that time when players are coming and going but as long as those who do come in have the right attitude, and of course quality, then we should be fine.

"Every individual has to show the manager how good he is in the friendly matches.

"It's a really good chance for this team to gel and get to know what the manager is looking for from us."
