Gomez thrilled with hat-trick

JORDI Gomez admitted he was on cloud nine after bagging his first hat-trick since his school days to help Latics see off Reading.

The Spaniard completed his brilliant treble deep into stoppage-time as Latics eventually overcame the Royals.

In doing so, he became only the second Spaniard in Premier League history to score a hat-trick after Fernando Torres.

“It’s good to know Torres and me are the only Spanish players to have scored hat-tricks in the Premier League and I hope there are more to come,” said Gomez.

“Everyone has signed the match ball and I will keep it somewhere safe at home.

“My last hat-trick was when I was a kid. I was 11 or 12 and was at Barcelona so it’s been a long time, but I’m very happy to score a hat-trick and the team won.

“We got the result we wanted and it can’t be better.”

The match-winning display would have tasted particularly sweet for Gomez, who was jeered by a small section of the home crowd after a couple of loose touches in the early stages.

“I’m used to it and it makes me stronger than ever,” added Gomez.

“I can’t say anything to them because they are free to say what they think.

“I’m just trying to play my football and give my best and I scored three goals.”

Boss Roberto Martinez has always remained 100 per cent behind the player he signed from Swansea in the summer of 2009.

And Gomez admits his goals were a perfect way of repaying that faith.

“He’s always been really helpful and brilliant with me since I’ve known him,” Gomez acknowledged.

“There isn’t one bad word you can say about him. He has always supported me and made me feel good at the club and so I’m very grateful to him.

“I’ve always been happy in the team and the club. This is my fourth season and I’m happy every day training and I’m happy when I’m playing and if I can score goals, even better.”
