Hot Rod smacks in winner

Wigan produced the ideal response to last week's 9-1 thrashing by Tottenham as Hugo Rodallega's solitary goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Sunderland.

Former Latics boss Steve Bruce's return to the DW Stadium was an unhappy one as the striker he signed 10 months ago inflicted a fifth away defeat of the campaign.

The Black Cats barely threatened throughout and after Wigan's Jason Scotland hit the post in the first half Rodallega's sixth Barclays Premier League goal of the season decided the contest.

Maynor Figueroa returning in place of Erik Edman was the only change as Wigan Athletic faced Sunderland at the DW Stadium

Figueroa had missed the previous three matches with a knee injury, with Latics conceding 14 goals during his absence.

Elsewhere, Roberto Martinez kept faith with the team that were hammered at Tottenham last weekend, with James McCarthy added to the bench.

Darren Bent was passed fit for Sunderland, managed by Steve Bruce, although former Latic Lee Cattermole missed out through injury.

Latics: Kirkland; Melchiot, Bramble, Boyce, Figueroa; N'Zogbia, Diame, Scharner, Thomas, Rodallega; Scotland. Subs: Pollitt, Cho, Amaya, Gomez, Koumas, Sinclair, McCarthy.

Sunderland: Fulop; Bardsley, Da Silva, Turner, McCartney; Malbranque, Cana, Henderson, Richardson, Reid; Bent. Subs: Carson, Ferdinand, Mensah, Nosworthy, Zenden, Healy, Campbell.
