Injury blow for McIlorum

Michael Maguire's Warriors suffered an injury worry over the weekend - the Australian's first match in charge against Crusaders last Friday went by without incident.

But less than 24 hours later, hooker Mike McIlorum went down with a knee injury while playing for the Under-20s in a friendly against Warrington.

The academy-product left the Orrell Co-Operative Community Stadium on crutches after suffering suspected ligament damage early in the match.

He will undergo a scan later today (Monday) to discover the extent of the injury and how long he may be ruled out for.

The setback could hardly have come at a worse time for the 22-year-old, who missed Wigan's three pre-season matches with a wrist problem suffered during training.

A veteran of nearly 50 Wigan first-team games, McIlorum has been praised by his team-mates for his stellar attitude and full-on approach during a gruelling off-season training programme, and surely would have been in contention for last Friday's opener against Crusaders had he been fit.

He was hoping to use Saturday's pre-season match against Warrington as a springboard into the senior team but went down just

minutes into the match.

Warriors U20s – the new name for the reserves – were led for the first time by new coach Darren Fletcher and included first-team player Karl Pryce in their squad.

They appeared in control for most of the match and led 22-8 at the break, but two tries in the final few minutes allowed Warrington to win 38-32.

In another blow, first-team squad player John Walker suffered a fractured cheekbone.

Half-back Joe Mellor is already out with a knee injury but of Maguire's senior players, Australian forward Phil Bailey (Achilles) and McIlorum are the only absentees.
