DAVID Jones admits this weekend’s FA Cup fifth round represents a “great opportunity” for Wigan Athletic.

This Sunday’s clash at Huddersfield Town – who last night saw off Leicester City in a fourth-round replay – will provide a welcome distraction from Wigan’s recent Premier League struggles.

It also gives the Premier League outfit a great chance of reaching the last eight for only the second time. And with both semi-finals being played at Wembley Stadium these days, Jones acknowledges Latics are within touching distance of something special.

“Being an Englishman, I’ve grown up with the FA Cup and it would mean a lot personally to get all the way to Wembley,” he said.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game but at the same time’s it’s also a great opportunity for us.

“We’re only two wins away from Wembley, and we know can really make an impact if we do ourselves justice.”

Latics could book their place in the last eight without playing a top-flight side, having seen off League One Bournemouth and Conference outfit Macclesfield to get this far.

Both of Wigan’s wins have come on the road – the same as their Capital One Cup triumphs at Nottingham Forest and West Ham – and Jones admits away trips do not hold any fear.

“I think we’ve probably played better away from home this season – that’s certainly been the case in the cup competitions,” he added.

“Our style away play perhaps suits being an away side, and we’re really looking forward to Sunday’s game.”
