Jones equaliser thwarts Latics

Kenwyne Jones' seventh goal of the season spared Sunderland boss Steve Bruce further misery as former club Wigan were denied victory on Wearside.

The Trinidad and Tobago international headed home a 64th-minute equaliser as the Black Cats staged a second-half fightback after a woeful opening 45 minutes.

Mohamed Diame had given the visitors a deserved 20th-minute lead and Craig Gordon had to make a fine 58th-minute save to prevent James McCarthy from making it 2-0.

The home side were dealt a blow with 20 minutes remaining when Jordan Henderson, who looked to have injured his ankle in a challenge with Maynor Figueroa, was carried off on a stretcher to be replaced by Boudweijn Zenden.

Roberto Martinez handed Marcelo Moreno a debut as a 74th-minute replacement for Paul Scharner with his side now coming under intense pressure.

Lee Cattermole picked up a booking for a robust challenge on McCarthy with 14 minutes remaining and Hugo Rodallega followed him within a minute for a late tackle on Michael Turner.

Darren Bent might have won it seconds into seven minutes of stoppage time, but his goal-bound shot hit prone team-mate Jones and bounced clear.
