Late penalty sinks Latics

Paul Jewell was left frustrated once again at the hands of the match officials after a controversial penalty six minutes from time handed Charlton three late points at The Valley.

Fitz Hall was penalised for a challenge on Marcus Bent in the box and Darren Bent smashed the ball past the despairing dive of John Filan.

Jewell said after the game: "If that was a penalty, from what I've seen, there would be 50 given a match."

In a frantic final quarter Caleb Folan had a couple of good chances

and Leighton Baines hit a piledriver just wide before the penalty decision undid all Wigan's good work.

Charlton now sit just three points behind Latics at the top of the relegation zone with West Ham closing the gap too after their victory at Middlesbrough.
