Caldwell: We've been a soft touch in defence

Gary Caldwell admits Latics have been a '˜little bit of a soft touch' in defence so far this season, and has vowed to change it.

The boss is preparing his side for a home clash against Burton this coming Saturday, and on the back of four points from the last two games will be hoping to increase Wigan’s unbeaten run to three.

But with a tough start to their Championship campaign, Caldwell says his players need to tighten up.

“Last year defending was always our strength,” he said.

“While we were a very attacking team, we also got a lot of clean sheets, we were a hard team to score against.

“This year, I feel we have become a little bit of a soft touch, we’re not getting into people enough.

“That could be the level we’ve come up to, playing against better players, and sometimes there is a fear about getting tight to better players.

“We’ve tried to take that away from the players, and instil a bit of trust in them – that if they get tight, and somebody does go by you, then somebody will cover and help you.”

Caldwell is also refusing to let the league table worry him, despite Latics’ proximity to the bottom three, though he has said they are doing their best to improve results,.

“I’ve always said going back to last season, the league table doesn’t matter,” he said.

“It’s only at the end of the season that you take the league table and take it for what it is.

“We know the results so far haven’t been good enough, but we’re working hard to change that.”
