Jacobs: We can handle step up

Michael Jacobs reckons Wigan Athletic are well-equipped to handle the step up in class next year.

Latics all-but secured their promotion back to the Championship last weekend with their 4-1 win over Southend, with Jacobs chipping in with a goal and two assists.

They can secure the League One title if they win at Blackpool tomorrow, and second-placed Burton fail to win.

And Jacobs says Latics would not look out of place in the Championship.

“There are a lot of big sides in that division,” he acknowledged.

“You look at the teams fighting at the top, including my old clubs Derby and Wolves – they’re massive clubs.

“The boys are bigger, stronger, quicker than in League One, and you have to be fitter to compete.

“But I don’t think stepping up would be that big a thing for us. We play at a nice stadium and we’re a big team in this division.

“Playing against those kind of sides would be something to look forward to – but we’re obviously not there yet.”
