Morgan: We have to improve

Craig Morgan reckons Wigan Athletic are only just beginning an exciting new era at the club.

The former Wales international was one of 20-plus arrivals at the club last summer in a major turnover of playing staff.

But under the watchful eye of Gary Caldwell, Latics recovered from a slow start to clinch promotion back to the Championship as League One winners.

And Morgan says this is only the start after a slump following relegation from the Premier League in 2013.

“We’ve already spoken about how much we’ll need to improve,” Morgan said.

“There’s players who are going to come in, and the ones who are staying will have to get even better - fitter, stronger, technically better.

“We’re going up a level, another step up, and everyone knows they have to improve.

Promotion will again be our aim next season, but we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves, because we know how difficult a league it is.

“We’ll do exactly what we’ve done this year - taking it five blocks at a time - and we’ll go from there.”

Despite the Wigan squad looking well-equipped to handle a step up in division, Morgan believes boss Caldwell will be looking to add quality this summer.

“It’s a natural process at football clubs, there’s always players coming in the door,” the club captain added.

“The nucleus of this squad will remain, but there’s always bits and bobs coming in.”
