Gary Caldwell’s men extended their unbeaten run to 19 matches, and took advantage of leaders Burton being held at home by Bury to take over at the summit.

Crucially, the gap to third-placed Walsall is also up to nine points after the Saddlers’ 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United.

Latics had to come from behind to pick up the three points, having trailed to Sullay Kaikai’s scrappy effort just before the half-hour mark.

The lead only lasted four minutes, with Conor McAleny adding another great goal to his collection by volleying home from distance.

Latics suffered a blow at the start of the second period when Reece Wabara limped off with a hamstring problem, to be replaced by Leon Barnett.

But three goals in the space of nine minutes either side of the hour mark saw the visitors put the game beyond the Shrews.

Yanic Wildschut put Latics ahead on 57 minutes, following in after McAleny had hit the post.

Jason Pearce - captain for the day after Craig Morgan’s 11th-hour withdrawal - headed home number three from Max Power’s inswinging corner.

And it was game over on 66 minutes, when top scorer Will Grigg was tripped in the area by last man Zak Whitbread.

After Whitbread was shown the inevitable red card, Grigg picked himself up and slotted home from the spot.

And Grigg made it five in the dying seconds, notching his 22nd goal of the season from close range after good work from Power.
