Latics have eye on Wolves winger Hammill
Adam Hammill
WOLVES winger Adam Hammill has emerged as a shock transfer target for Wigan Athletic.
The Evening Post can exclusively reveal that Hammill is on Roberto Martinez’s January radar.
Hammill, 23, joined Wolves from Barnsley for £500,000 exactly 12 months ago today, with Latics one of a number of clubs pipped to his signature.
Now, it seems, Martinez could get his man second time round after Hammill slipped down the Molineux pecking order.
Latics have been priced out of a move for Tottenham winger Giovani Dos Santos.
But Hammill – who came through the ranks at Liverpool and scored 12 goals in 70 appearances for Barnsley before Wolves activated a release clause in his contract – is within budget.
Martinez is seeking at least two reinforcements to his squad this month, and has both domestic loans still available after Patrick van Aanholt’s return to Chelsea.
Blackburn midfielder Keith Andrews remains a target, while Leeds pair Ross McCormack and Adam Clayton are also reportedly on the Wigan boss’ wishlist.
“It is not about finding that super player who can come in and save our season,” said Martinez. “That is not the way we are and that is not the way we work.
“I think it is a player who can help the players we already have here. The group is very strong, but we need to look at a couple of options that could help.”
Martinez, meanwhile, is confident Latics can smash their capital jinx at QPR tomorrow afternoon.
Last season’s victory at Tottenham remains Wigan’s only win in London since December 2006, but Martinez believes all records – good or bad – are there to be broken.
“I do like stats, because I feel it is the only way to achieve things,” he added.
“As an example, one person ran the 100 metres in under 10 seconds for the first time, and all of a sudden you had four or five people doing it.
“There is a mental approach, and stats give you a motivation to achieve things. I don’t think they stop you getting somewhere, I think it is the opposite.
“Records are there to be re-written, and that is something we have been doing at Wigan.
“Not long ago we had not beaten a top four club – two years ago we beat three of them. We keep beating the odds, and probably those little challenges are something that are important to us.”

Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 02:14 PMAm I missing something or does Martinez have a blind spot, strikers who actually know where the goals are regularly, not just every now and again like perhaps once a month or even longer like Hugo. I thought if they couldn't beat QPR then that's it, and so it is. What is worse now in the absence of no decent striker, the defencemidfield are now making stupid mistakes giving away penalties and free kicks and then don't bother to mark up opponents who like Dzeko for City had no pressure and scored easily. I have said it a few times in the past but Martinez is taking the ship down and perhaps Whelan will jump in the drink to complete the clubs demise.

Very Very Well Said Lyndon36 100% Right........And also jones66 is spot on.. the lowest scoring team in the country, we need goals and a striker who can do it and what does he think we need ....A WINGER... thats says it all !!!!!. Il say it again.. Martinez should have gone at the beginning of the season when villa wanted him.. at least if were to go down.. we'd go down playing well and scoring goals...

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 04:06 PMmona, as I have said on numerous occasions, the club is now fully set for a relegation slot, and with potential signings like this, that is what RM is gearing up for, as uncle Dave will be pulling his money out at the first opertunity along with the ball on payment. It also looks as though the plan to capitalise on the sale of Hugo and diame has failed, so you can bet DW will be mighty miffed at that, as he will have to let them both go for a free at the end of the season. As much as it pains me to say it, relegation is all that RM and DW deserve. However I feel sorry for all the fans as we have all been sold a complete pack of lies by this clown and DW

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 01:42 PMNot a lot, like most myths that have been created by the Latics spin machine.. There are one or two enlightened subscribers who have been banging on for ages that the club's target is relegation. This would enable the clubs management to escape the scrutiny of it's critics.
