Latics in chasing pack for Mariappa

WIGAN Athletic are in the hunt to snap-up Watford’s promising defender Adrian Mariappa as the transfer window gets ready to slam shut.

Premier League rivals Newcastle have been leading the pack for Mariappa, 25, and have had two bids rejected, leaving the way clear for Latics to swoop.

Watford are reluctant to lose the centre-back, who has also been linked with Arsenal, but Latics are hoping they can entice him away before the transfer window closes.

Meanwhile, chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that Hugo Rodallega’s potential move to Fulham has fallen through.

The Cottagers offered a cash plus player deal for the Colombian but it fell through when Fulham forward Andy Johnson refused to move up north.
