UWE Rosler says Shaun Maloney will be involved in first team action “very soon”.

The midfielder returned as an unused substitute during Tuesday’s draw with Leicester but the Latics manager says the fact he didn’t appear doesn’t mean he can’t be thrown into the fray soon.

Maloney has been on the sidelines for six months with a hip injury and has recently come through his appearances in the development squad unscathed.

Rosler was prepared to use the Scot on Tuesday but decided against it in the end with the game being played at a very high tempo.

One of the biggest cheers of the night came when Maloney warmed up on the sidelines for the first time.

“I had to make a decision,” said Rosler. “I always felt the system would work and it worked.

“I was thinking maybe to bring Shaun on when he was needed to go behind the two strikers, that was the main thinking.

“Shaun will now be involved very soon, I can’t tell you which game that will be, I felt that against Leicester the intensity was too high.

“It would have been a big gamble because he had not played at a high intensity for a long time.

“In general he is ready, he is a class footballer, everybody is looking forward to getting him integrated again into our team and I hope that will be
soon.”
