Martinez frustrated and angry
ROBERTO Martinez admitted to being “frustrated and angry” after seeing Wigan Athletic extend their winless sequence to six matches.
Latics remain in the bottom three after going down 2-1 at Everton, having once again found themselves on the wrong end of a controversial call from the official at a crucial point.
Shaun Maloney looked to have been clearly fouled in the area at the start of the second period by Leon Osman, who had given Everton the lead moments before.
But Lee Mason waved play on - and Phil Jagielka made it 2-0 to the Toffees before Arouna Kone’s late consolation.
“It is very clear - Shaun Maloney is not a player that looks for penalties,” fumed Martinez.
“He is someone who, once he gets in that one-against-one situation, you know how effective he can be.
“He goes past his defender easily and there is no need for him to go down. But I think if you look at Leon Osman’s reaction it tells you everything.
“The contact was very clear. Shaun Maloney shows great skill, goes past him with ease. Leon Osman doesn’t follow him, just sticks his leg out. I don’t really understand what the referee saw and I am getting a bit tired of talking about these moments. I’m frustrated and angry.”
The decision came on the back of last weekend’s frustrating home defeat to Arsenal, when Latics lost to a hotly-disputed penalty and had two decent shouts of their own turned down.
“It is something not going for us,” acknowledged Martinez. “If we need to play extra well to get a positive result, that is what we have got to do.
“It was the same against Arsenal. The performance was magnificent and we didn’t get anything to show for it.
“We need to make sure we play extra well now because we can’t rely on any breaks or any lucks or extra decisions.
“We knew we were coming to a difficult place, but I thought we stopped them from having any momentum in the first half. We were starting to get into a good position to get a positive result, and you are looking at the actions in both boxes cost us. We need to make sure we don’t rely on third parties - you don’t rely on decisions to get positive results. We need to make sure we change that quickly. We will learn from it.”
