THE future of Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez remains very much up in the air, as the Spaniard continues to soak up the sun in Barbados.
It was widely reported on Sunday that Latics would be holding a press conference this coming Tuesday during which Martinez would reveal whether or not he will stay at the club.
However, the Evening Post can reveal that is NOT the case – and club officials are baffled as to where these reports have come from, and how they have been taken as gospel. The 38-year-old met Liverpool’s owners in Miami last Thursday to discuss the managerial vacancy at Anfield, but it’s understood he’s still not made up his mind whether to accept that challenge.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan claimed the Spaniard had received an offer from Liverpool’s principal owner John Henry after their meeting in Miami.
Throughout the process, though, Whelan has always insisted it was not a foregone conclusion he would lose his manager.
While everyone at the DW is obviously hoping Martinez stays, skipper Gary Caldwell admitted over the weekend that no-one would blame the Spaniard if he were to take the Liverpool job.
“If the opportunity comes to go to Liverpool, you take it,” Caldwell said.
“We all understand that – I’m sure he would take it. Having worked with him and knowing his tactical awareness and the thought he puts into training, who knows what he could go on and achieve at a big club like Liverpool with their resources?”
Caldwell, meanwhile, had a less than enjoyable weekend with Scotland on the wrong end of a 5-1 hammering against the USA in Florida.

The defeat wasn’t the way Caldwell and team-mates James McArthur and Shaun Maloney wanted to mark their history-making appearance.
It’s thought Saturday’s game was the first time Latics have ever provided three players for the same international XI.
