Martinez issues hands off warning

Set for debut - Jean Beausejour

Set for debut - Jean Beausejour

LATICS boss Roberto Martinez has a strong message for any big clubs looking to sign up Victor Moses and James McCarthy – while at the same time hinting the club would be open to offers for most of the squad if adequate replacements could be found.

Moses has been strongly linked with a move back to London with Mark Hughes’ QPR, who have also had a bid for Hugo Rodallega turned down, while Republic of Ireland starlet McCarthy is another who seems to be continually rumoured to be on the radar of a host of top flight clubs.

Today could prove to be truly hectic for Martinez with the final day of the transfer window falling at the same time as tonight’s tough trip to Premier League title-chasing Tottenham.

And while the Latics boss is clearly focused on keeping hold of his prized assets Moses and McCarthy, he did not rule out exits for other players, including Hugo Rodallega.

Martinez said: “In this window any decision that will be made is for the good of Wigan Athletic.

“You can take a financial decision above a football one sometimes, but in our position we cannot afford to do that. Victor Moses is still growing and has enormous potential. That’s why we invested so heavily in him. With any other player it could be different because of their personal situation or because you could end up with a stronger squad at the end of it, but the two big players at Wigan Athletic are Victor Moses and James McCarthy, and they are not for sale.”

Meanwhile, Latics’ new signing Jean Beausejour is likely to go straight into Martinez’s squad to face Spurs at White Hart Lane tonight after signing from Birmingham last week.

Defender Antolin Alcaraz has not recovered from a groin problem, while midfielder David Jones is also not expected to return after a calf strain.

Martinez said: “David had a little tear in his calf muscle, but he is recovering really well.

“Probably Tuesday will be a little bit too early but he won’t be too much longer than that.

“You need to be careful with soft-tissue injuries, though, and we can’t afford to rush him back before he’s ready. He a very intelligent player and they can adapt to different positions and different formations.”

Rodallega continues to be linked with a move away, Tottenham reportedly after the striker’s signature.
