MARTYN Waghorn is aiming to hit the ground running in a Wigan Athletic shirt at Huddersfield tomorrow.
The 24-year-old is in line to make his Latics debut at the John Smith’s Stadium after his deadline-day arrival from Leicester.
Waghorn will spend the rest of the season on loan at the DW – and he hopes to fire Latics into a play-off spot during his time here.
“My targets are to play as many games as I can, to score a few goals, and get Wigan pushed up that table,” he told the Evening Post.
“We’ve a few games in hand which we can hopefully use to our benefit.”
Waghorn spent the first half of the season on loan at Millwall, helping the Lions to a 2-1 victory over Latics just before Christmas.
Thankfully, that’s not been held against him, and the former England Under-21 ace admits his settling-in period has been relatively straightforward.
“The players and the staff here seem great so I’m looking forward to my time,” Waghorn added.
“It’s like your first week at school – you’re nervous.
“But sometimes that can help you to perform better and that’s what I’m hoping for.”
WIGAN’S hopes of landing West Brom centre-back Craig Dawson appear to be fading.
Latics failed in a deadline-day bid to take Dawson, who will face Crystal Palace this weekend after a defensive crisis at the Hawthorns.
“For me Dawson is the future of West Brom,” admitted new boss Pepe Mel. “He’s a very good centre-back.”
