New boys primed for action
Roberto Martinez has hinted new signings Victor Moses and Marcelo Moreno will be fast-tracked into the reckoning for Latics' trip to Sunderland on Saturday.
Wigan crashed out of the FA Cup in humiliating fashion on Tuesday at the hands of League Two side Notts County.
It was the second time in four days Latics had fired blanks at home, following the weekend reversal to Everton.
And Martinez says he is not afraid to make sweeping changes to his attack with tension mounting at the foot of the Premier League table.
He told the Evening Post: "The two new signings will give us better competition up front.
"And it is clear to see we have been very low on confidence in front of goal this season.
"If you look at the chances we missed on Tuesday night, and the chances we missed on Saturday, we need to be scoring goals when we create such good opportunities."
Latics also conceded another goal from a set-piece against County, to add to Tim Cahill's winner for Everton at the weekend and both goals at Blackburn the previous Wednesday.
Part of the problem may be the new zonal-marking system introduced this season, but Martinez has called on his men to get it right – and fast.
He said: "Your concentration and starting positions from
set-plays are aspects you have to master, and we'll continue to work on putting that right.
"We have to improve in that department – we can't leave ourselves with mountains to climb in every game and we have to be solid enough to defend from every set-play.
"It comes down to individual jobs. We use a mix of zonal and man-marking systems from set-pieces, and when you have your own job to look after a man it's disappointing when it goes wrong."
