Newcastle 3 Wigan 0

IT was unlucky thirteen for Wigan at St James’ Park as Maynor Figueroa conceded a penalty and saw red in the 13th minute leaving Latics with a mountain to climb.

Demba Ba cooly slotted home the resultant spot kick after Figueroa’s shoulder barge on Papiss Cisse and added a second midway through the first half before Gael Bigirimana wrapped up the win in the second half with a superb curler into the top corner.

Wigan came out with purpose after the break despite being a man down but never really threatened and Newcastle always looked the likely victors.

It was sweet revenge for the Toon after their 4-0 drubbing at the DW Stadium at the end of last season.
