Nicho’s set for big test
Lee Nicholls
WIGAN Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has hinted that highly rated goalkeeper Lee Nicholls would benefit from a spell away from the club.
England Under-20s stopper Nicholls signed a new long-term contract with Latics last week, and immediately set his sights on fighting Ali Al Habsi for the No.1 shirt.
That’s for the more medium-term future though it would seem, with Martinez clearly having high hopes for the talented youngster.
The Latics boss said: “Lee represents a completely different generation in our football club.
“We’ve always been very aware of his talent and his potential, and it’s important now that he gets to the next level.
“He has a personal desire to be a No.1 for Wigan Athletic, and he can help himself to get there by going out on loan.
“He has been progressing really well under Inaki Bergara, but it’s important now he plays more games and starts to test himself in the first-team environment.
“It’s very important to get the right mix between getting the concepts you need as a young player and testing yourself in a competitive game.”
