Not so magnificent seven for Roberto

editorial image

ROBERTO Martinez could be without as many as SEVEN first-teamers for Wigan Athletic’s visit of Reading tomorrow.

Ben Watson (broken leg) and Gary Caldwell (hamstring) were forced off at Liverpool last week, joining an injury list that already included James McArthur (dead leg), Antolin Alcaraz (groin) and Albert Crusat (knee).

Martinez revealed yesterday that Ryo Miyaichi and Franco di Santo have picked up knocks in training this week, leaving him with a real selection headache.

“This is one of the worst periods for injuries for a long time,” Martinez acknowledged.

“But if I’m being honest, you have to be prepared for that.

“That’s why you work with a squad of 24 – even though in our case part of that 24 is very, very young.

“But I’m confident if we need to use the youngsters, they’re ready to help the team.”
