WIGAN Athletic will reap the rewards from Franco di Santo’s call-up to the Argentina squad, according to Roberto Martinez.
The striker has been picked alongside three of the best forwards in world football to face Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on November 14.
Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella has selected di Santo with Gonzalo Higuain, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.
It’s the 23-year-old’s first call-up and with Barcelona star Messi in the squad but touch-and-go to play in the game with his wife set to give birth, the Wigan player could well make an appearance.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez says he is extremely proud of di Santo and believes he will learn a lot from the experience.
“Just to be called up is an incredible achievement,” said Martinez. “You look on the right handside and you see Lionel Messi, you look to the left and you see Kun Aguero and you’ve got Tevez who hasn’t been called up and Higuain. They are world class players who are winning trophies.
“It’s been a fascinating journey to see his transformation from a young boy with great potential to a proper footballer who can achieve a lot in the game. He was very, very proud.”
Out of contract at the end of the season, much has been made of di Santo’s future but it is something which doesn’t worry Martinez.
“I’m pretty confident (he will stay),” he added. “If I’m honest, we haven’t even looked into it yet in detail. We have had conversations as we always have with all the players as they get into that situation but we all know what we want and what we want is to carry on with the development.”
