Roberto not embarrassed

ROBERTO Martinez insisted seeing his Premier League side once again dumped out of the FA Cup by League Two opposition was “not at all embarrassing”.

Two years after slipping up against Notts County, Latics this time came a cropper at Swindon having mustered only one shot on target in the entire 90 minutes.

Even that came from a rebound from a missed penalty, Callum McManaman following up and ramming home after Ben Watson’s shot had hit the post.

And the hosts deservedly came from behind to go through, thanks to goals from Alan Connell and Paul Benson.

“It’s not an embarrassment – not at all,” insisted Martinez, who had made nine changes to the side that had lost at home to Sunderland in midweek.

“I don’t regret making nine changes. My only regret was I didn’t make 11 changes.

“Obviously the result was disappointing, and we didn’t get the outcome we were looking for.

“We got the lead that we deserved, but we conceded too softly and their winning goal was clearly offside.

“But in many ways, I was happy with the youngsters and the way they adapted.

“The FA Cup is a unique opportunity to have a look at a lot of players who haven’t played a lot of football this season, and to see how the youngsters are developing.

“It helps to show me who is ready, and who can help us in the second half of the season, to secure our main aim which is to ensure safety in the Premier League.

“I have a lot more information about how the whole squad is shaping up, and what we need to do in this transfer window to take us through to the end of the season.”
