We should have won: Martinez

Roberto Martinez believes the draw at Sunderland was two points dropped rather than one gained as Latics went a long way towards redemption after the Notts County horror show.

Wigan were barely recognisable from the side that bowed out of the FA Cup so meekly in midweek, and will feel hard done-by at only taking a point from the long trip to Wearside.

After leading through Mohamed Diame's thunderbolt, Latics squandered gilt-edged chances to score what surely would have been a decisive

second goal through James McCarthy and Charles N'Zogbia.

And while disappointed at Kenwyne Jones' equaliser midway through the second half, Martinez believes Latics have laid themselves a positive platform for the rest of the campaign.

The Wigan manager said: "It was a tough encounter. We all knew Sunderland were going to be physical and put pressure on us in the final third, but we coped with that very well.

"Coming away from home, it's always difficult to score the first goal and we did well to get in front.

"From there we created good chances to kill the game and claim three points, which would have been deserved."
