WIGAN Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has sparked controversy by insisting a minute’s silence should be observed at Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final in memory of ex-Prime Minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher.

The 76-year-old has insisted that respect must be shown to the former PM but it is a sentiment not shared by the majority in the town.

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Whelan said: “We owe Mrs Thatcher a minute’s silence.

“It is not my decision, it is for the FA to decide, but I would be in favour of wearing an armband out of respect to Mrs Thatcher.

“We have to say thank you very much for the services the former PM has given us.”
