Whelan confident of staying up

DAVE Whelan remains confident there is enough quality and fight in the Wigan Athletic squad to get the club out of its current trouble.

Latics have just 16 games to save themselves after slumping to a third defeat on the spin at fellow strugglers QPR.

They are now four points adrift of fourth-bottom Bolton who, along with Blackburn, are showing signs of recovery after a poor start.

Latics next face a tough trip to Tottenham next Tuesday ahead of a two-month block of games – all winnable – that will make or break their campaign.

And Whelan, who has been there and done it all during his time as a player and now chairman, insists that all is not lost.

“It’s going to be difficult, very difficult, but it can be done,” Whelan told the Observer.

“There’s no doubt we’re up against it. Big style.

“We have a got a very tough job on our hands to stay up.

“But we can still do it – of that there’s no doubt.

“There was a time last year when we faced a similar situation and we got out of it.

“In fact, there’s only been a couple of years we haven’t had to fight our way of trouble so, in that respect, it’s nothing new. When you’re in the Premier League, you accept it will be tough – but it’s wonderful being in there and fighting.”

Latics are a shining exampe to every small team of what can be achieved, it keeps the dream alive for every football and non-league team. Latics get so much stick because we haven't done the expected which is win promoted, be patronised by the MOTD pundits for our good but nieave football, before going down and being forgoten about., we've actually stuck around, the town has been promoted in every corner of the world. The quality of our squad has decreased because we've cut back on wages but that's preferable to doing a Portsmouth, giving you a good couple of seasons before struggling against administration.

I'm only stating a trusim, every one of the past seven seasons we've been one of the favourites to go down. They say the bookies are rarely wrong, in Latics case they've been wrong not just for the last seven, we were also a favourite to go down in the Championship, and we know how that went. With one result dramatically changing the relegation and title picture, no one can take anything for granted.

Never say never, if there's one things Latics have a habit of doing it's confounding the odds, I wouldn't put the house on us going down.

I'm glad you're confident Dave, because no one else is. We've had our fun, but I really can't see us staying up, or ever getting back up again to be honest. Sad but true.

Sorry, Dave but, in the past, we've had players who could fight their way out of it. Now we don't.
