Wigan Athletic 2 Southampton 2

Wigan Athletic v Southampton: Paul Scharner in aerial combat

Wigan Athletic v Southampton: Paul Scharner in aerial combat

A LATE, late equaliser from Shaun Maloney gave Wigan Athletic a precious point that their overall performance didn’t really deserve.

Having taken the lead through skipper Gary Caldwell, Latics were second best in most areas for the remainder.

They were pegged back when Rickie Lambert headed Southampton level just after the hour mark.

And it looked as though the Saints would take all three points when Jay Rodriguez ran half the length of the field and teed up Morgan Schneiderlin for a tap-in with five minutes remaining.

But credit Latics for dragging themselves off the canvas, and Maloney was in the right place at the right time to slot in from close range with seconds left.

Paul Scharner played his part in the goal, causing confusion in the Saints goalmouth at Jean Beausejour’s corner, and the Austrian’s polished performance on his second ‘debut’ was the other plus.
