A GOAL in either half from Ivan Ramis and James McArthur helped Latics to a deserved 2-1 victory over West Ham.

Ramis, who had been a transfer target for the Hammers in the summer before choosing Wigan, grabbed the opener on seven minutes, a cracking volley from Jean Beausejour’s corner.

And the home side doubled their advantage within 90 seconds of the restart when McArthur thumped a beauty past Jussi Jaaskelainen and into the bottom corner.

In truth, Latics could and should have had more, with McArthur, James McCarthy and Shaun Maloney running the midfield from start to finish.

The Hammers came close to pulling one back in the last minute when James Tomkins saw his volley deflected on to the Wigan bar.

And Tomkins popped up again in the third added minute to head past Ali Al Habsi and ensure a nervy final few seconds.

But an equaliser would have absolutely flattered the visitors, who were second best in virtually every department.

It was an unhappy return to the DW for Momo Diame, who wndured a frustrating afternoon and was substituted inside the final quarter.
